GENERAL SKINCARE QUESTIONS

Acne is a quite normal and skin condition that almost everyone experiences during puberty. However, it can persist into adulthood due to hormonal changes, a poor diet, blocked pores, or skin infections. The best way to treat your acne at home is to use products containing either a form of Vitamin A, Salicylic acid and/or niacinamide.

Vitamin A is an antioxidant that decreases the inflammation caused by acne and increases skin cell growth to heal lesions and scars.

Salicylic acid is a BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid) that penetrates your skin and works to dissolve the dead skin cells clogging your pores.

Niacinamide has anti-inflammatory properties and helps to control sebum and oil production as excessive oil can lead to more acne.

If you have a stronger form of Acne that causes excessive irritation and bleeding, then it is best to refer to a dermatologist.

If you are new to building a skincare routine, then it is best to start off slow and get your basics down before you start layering your routine with different serums and treatments. The 3 most basic and important steps to any skin care routine are:

Cleanse (in both the am & pm):

The use of a good cleanser can greatly improve the look of your skin as it helps remove dirt, dead skin, and other impurities. You do not want to be applying a moisturizer over unclean skin. Some people may find that skipping a cleanser in the AM and opting for just water can help the condition of their skin (depending on your skin’s needs and skin type) – it can be worth playing around to find what works for you. Make sure the water isn’t too warm – hot water can strip skin of its natural oils leaving your skin feeling dry and tight.

Moisturize(in both the am & pm):

The use of a good moisturizer helps draw and lock moisture giving your skin a hydrated and healthy look. It is important to choose a moisturizer according to your skin type as those with normal to dry skin generally use moisturizers that have a thicker base and contain oils to keep the skin barrier strong preventing water loss. Those with oily and combination skin use lighter moisturizers that are oil free and are sometimes water or gel based.

It is important to try different products to find what best suits you.

SPF:

Using SPF is the most important step of any skincare routine. The UV rays of the Sun can damage skin, accelerate signs of aging, cause unwanted dark spots and hyper pigmentation. To prevent this and keep your skin looking young and healthy it is recommended to use a broad-spectrum SPF of 30 to 50 on a daily basis. Make it a part of your daily morning routine and replay throughout the day every 3-4 hours.

A proper lifestyle and skin care routine may improve your skin, but to keep it glowing and healthy for longer, you need to keep up with things regularly. When searching for products to give your skin a natural glow it is best to first know what your skin type is:

Dry skin: Your skin feels tight, flaky, and parched.

Oily skin: Your skin is greasy and shiny.

Combination skin: Your T-zone is greasy, but your cheeks and jaw are dry.

Normal skin: Your skin is neither too oily nor excessively dry.

Sensitive skin: Your skin easily turns red and gets inflamed and itchy.

It is wise to use products that offer multiple benefits. For example, a moisturizer that has both anti-aging and brightening properties or a cream that reduces blemishes and evens out skin tone. Protecting your skin from the UV rays is one of the most important steps. Never forget to apply sunscreen before heading out.

When trying to find the best skincare products to use that would best suit your skin type there are a few things that you should be looking for. You should be looking for products that use either naturally sourced ingredients or ingredients that are non-comedogenic (as not all ingredients can always be natural).

What you should also be aware of is if the product contains any silicones, parabens, sulphates, or phosphates as it is recommended to avoid products that contain them to prevent any form of skin irritation.

Pimples are stubborn to get rid of but with the use of the right products they can be easily taken care off without any hassles from the comfort of your home. The most common product used are pimple patches. They promote healing of pimples and protects them from dirt, hand contact and other contaminants that may cause infections leading to skin conditions such as acne.

Products like facewashes and creams containing ingredients such as salicylic acid, vitamin A, and/or niacinamide are great for controlling sebum and oil production and help prevent pores from clogging.

The best way to minimize pores on your face is to use skincare products that are Oil free or non-Comedogenic. The word “non-comedogenic” means the product won’t clog your pores. When pores clog, they expand, which can make them look more noticeable.

Cleansing daily with a suitable cleanser or the use of a good exfoliator can unclog pores and reduce oiliness. Protection from the sun’s rays is a must to avoid premature aging which causes pores to be more visible.
